Less than one percent of the US population is in the military - an all-volunteer force that has been at war for decades. One of my former commanders pointed out how citizens in some countries run from the military - here, they run to the military. It is very humbling to say the least I typically respond by thanking them for their support as well, and recognizing that we cannot do what we do without them. If you are in uniform in public, people routinely come up to you and thank you for your service. The military has a public trust that is unmatched across career paths. I am proud to serve and it is an honor and a privilege to serve our great state and nation. I have touched on a couple points already that make my career path special, especially as a “Buckeye” working as an Ohio Guardsman. What advice/insight do you have for Ohio State I graduated from Ohio State Mansfield and received the same great education as if I were at main campus. YOUTUNES DON WILLIAMS SONGS FULLOhio State provided great traditions, academic excellence, and for me, a regional campus that would allow me to work full time while earning my education. Knowing this, I chose The Ohio State University because, in my opinion, it is the best university. Essentially, we have the opportunity to graduate from college debt free, better for having been a part of something bigger than ourselves, and ready to contribute as a Citizen-Airman. This is a state of Ohio benefit, as the state realizes the value of having and supporting their “home town/state Air Force and Army National Guard.” Airmen and soldiers are also eligible for federal benefits that augment the state benefits. Upon enlistment in the Ohio Air National Guard and at my swearing in - where you take an oath to the President of the United States and the Governor of Ohio that you will support and defend the Constitution of the United State and the state of Ohio - I immediately became eligible for a full scholarship to state based institutions. Who do you want to work with? What cause excites you? How do you want to spend your day? Knowing the answers to those questions are the keys to career success. Because of that experience, I’ve been able to develop a business that I love as a workforce educator and trainer for baby boomer job seekers, career transitioners, and entrepreneurs. But it was, by far, my favorite job because I really enjoy working with adult learners. Being an assistant dean for student affairs at a graduate school wasn’t on my radar screen until I became one. You never know who can help you because you don’t know who their friends, family, in-laws, and college roommates are. Meet as many people doing different things as you possibly can. Informational interviews are an awesome way to network, obtain valuable advice, and explore a variety of career options. There are so many jobs people never think of. What advice or insight do you have for Ohio State Because of the diversity of experience I gained at Ohio State, I wake up every day loving what I do and helping others to get more done while having more fun. My TEDx talk, delivered at TEDxOhioStateUniversity, has more than 100,000 views and I've been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes and Fast Company. Since then I've delivered over 500 events for more than 35,000 people at more than 250 organizations on topics like creating a positive workplace culture, career ownership, stress management and leading on your feet. I started my company, Humor That Works, part-time in 2009 and then left P&G to focus on the company full-time in 2012. Along the way, I realized that the skills I was learning from improv and stand-up comedy were the same skills that can help you with humans.
